About the Flowers
Opal are donating some metal flowers to raffle towards the 2025 Festival – Possible story about what they do?

A short write up and a couple of photos of the students. They ok’d the photos to be used at the time in the collage news letter.
As a company we work closely with a local Kent collage to bring young people into the engineering/manufacture industry. We like to get them involved in the design and manufacturing processes as soon as we can as we have found this gives them something to focus on and it helps if they feel what they are doing is useful. The students get involved in costing jobs and one was to make steel flowers, they liked the look of them and asked to have a go at making one of his own. One evening I was thinking of ways to contribute to our Lodge 2025 festival target and something for the work experience students to do. This is how the idea came about to make the forget me knots. The challenge was to design them to look the part but also fit in a large envelop so they could be posted anywhere. This involved 3D design software, CNC programming and using a range of the hand tools and machines. This worked well for us as it gave an opportunity to see how they performed on the factory floor and not just the interview room. The young people were positive and got stuck in. There were a few issues with time keeping and being away from their phones to start with. In most cases this did improve over time. It was interesting to see how the interested ones were more inquisitive and keener to get involved, and the ones that soon worked out that engineering wasn’t for them. One hundred were made and powder coated in total and have proved popular.
