Thursday 25th August saw the 6th fixture of this years East Kent Masonic Golf Season and we were greeted with a warm welcome by West Malling Golf club.
The long hot summer had certainly ended abruptly with the club urgently contacting the secretary to inform him that no buggies would be permitted on the course due to the extreme rainfall overnight.
Not being deterred, the waiting pack assembled to enjoy the traditional bacon roll on arrival where the secretary organised tee times and pairings in his usual efficient manner. Forgetting that West Malling in fact have two courses, this quickly went pear shaped when the secretary had in fact picked up the scorecards for the wrong course!
Despite the administration errors, we took to the first tee at 10am sharp under an array of brollies and wet weather clothing. The weather stayed poor for the first half or so of each round but gradually cleared up.
The golfing talent was undeterred by the downpour and Roger Charter took his maiden EKMGA event win with a score of 38 points. Runner up came Nigel Turner, also with 38 points but missing out on the top prize on countback.
The usual presentations followed with captain Daren Horne fleecing the players for “fines”. This raised a £164.32 which will go towards his charity of the year, Dandelion time.
Dandelion Time is a nature-based charity that gives early support to children who’ve suffered from traumatic experiences such as domestic abuse and neglect. We help them overcome their emotional and behavioural issues to build self-esteem and confidence, and cope better at home, at school and in life.
