The Harmonia Village at Dover

Dementia presents a huge challenge to society, both now and increasingly in the future. In 2015 there were 850,000 people living with dementia in the UK, by 2025 this will have grown to 1,142.677.

Dementia now costs the UK economy £26.3 Billion a year. To put this in perspective, that is enough to pay everyone’s energy bills for one year.

So far, the NHS has focused on removing people with dementia to a safe place, with no care for the illness. This takes up valuable beds and increases the load on hospitals and the NHS.

The New Harmonia Village, being built in Randolph Road, Dover, Kent, has six houses. They look and feel like everyday homes, with the added peace of mind that they provide round the clock dedicated care by an on-site team.

Each house has five bedrooms, two on the ground floor and three on the first floor. All are accessible by stairs and a wheelchair accessible lift.

The Harmonia Village is designed to give the dementia patients a quality of life which is not available at present. It is hoped that further villages will be built across the UK.

I Mike Goodwin, became involved with the development when I was given a tour as the Head of The Snar Gate Masonic Lodge in Dover. In the development there is a Jukebox, this is on loan and will shortly be removed. The jukebox provides a valuable tool for the members of the village. Having on tap music, with songs and tunes that they know is so beneficial. I therefore would like to keep the Jukebox in the village, but like all things, it comes at a cost.

The cost of keeping the jukebox in the village is £5000. The village just do not have the funds to to keep it, so I have taken it upon myself to help raise the £5000 needed to keep it.

I would like to present it to the village as a gift from us Freemasons in the Dover, Deal, Sandwich and St Margaret’s area. Other lodges are free to contribute!

I am asking for each lodge to donate a maximum £250, I will then ask if the Cornwallis East Kent Freemasons Charity can match fund our donations.

If your lodge would like to get involved and donate, please can you contact me using the form below?

I would like to thank you all for your anticipated support.

Yours Sincerely and Fraternally.

Mike Goodwin.
