REQUEST 2021 Update

Some of you may remember just over a year ago, East and West Kent Freemasons donated money towards a very exciting expedition, a voyage to Antarctica, marking 100 years of the famous voyage taken by Ernest Shackleton on his ship Quest.

The Shackleton-Rowett Expedition of 1921-1922 included two Scouts: James Marr and Norman Mooney. On 30th December 2021 the team of ten scouts and their leaders followed in Marr and Mooney’s footsteps and departed from South America for Antarctica.

Alan Noake, one of the Kent Scout leaders, attended the Provincial Officers Mess and gave a talk about the trip and thanked everyone in East Kent for their support.

The group in Port Lockroy

The team arrive in Port Lockroy. Port Lockroy has been known as a safe anchorage following its use by the whaling fleets of the early 20th century and for this reason was selected for the first continuously occupied British base to establish year round British presence in Antarctica. Base A, Port Lockroy was established on the 11th February 1944 as part of a wartime mission code-named Operation Tabarin.

The Province of East Kent, Provincial Officers Mess Meeting, held on the 20th October 2022, members enjoying the presentation by Alan. As one member said, it was one of the best meetings I have ever attended, fantastic!
