Malling Centenary Win the William Blay Trophy
Malling Centenary Win the William Blay Trophy
May saw the annual inter lodge golfing tournament for the William Blay trophy at West Malling Golf club where 7 teams submitted entries to challenge for this prestigious trophy.
William Blay was a past deputy Provincial Grand Master in the Province of Kent prior to the province being split into East & West Kent. This prestigious trophy, which is housed in the museum at Canterbury, has been contested each year since 1949. With the decline of lodges and demands on peoples time, the entry qualification has been reduced to a minimum of two members of the same lodge. For those lodges requiring extra players, a random draw was made to make up the teams.
Richard Watts Lodge provided great support with two teams and were joined by teams from Malling Centenary lodge, Maeidis Stanna Lodge, Spirit of Rugby lodge, Weald of Kent lodge & Royal Navy Lodge. The format for the day was an individual Stableford but the trophy won by the 3 from 4 Stableford scores of each team.
Back in the clubhouse, the scores were hurriedly put together by the secretary who announced to the captain that Richard Watts Lodge had retained their crown on countback. After an enquiry the scores were recounted, and somewhat embarrassed secretary realised that in fact made a huge blunder in calculating the scores and in fact, Malling centenary lodge were the days winners. The usual “charity collection bucket”. This raised £115 which will be donated later to the captains charity.
