Julian Friel storms to victory in GGD Bowl at Kings Hill
Originally scheduled to be an inter provincial match again Surrey after our narrow defeat in 2023, We headed to Etchinghill Golf club just outside of Folkestone.
Unfortunately, late in the day, Surrey were unable to field a team to defend the shield and so the event was quickly turned into a social Stableford.
Arriving just after 9, the banter took hold with the subject of the incorrect team being announced as winners at the William Blay event being a hot topic.
Fresh from his embarrassing error, and after a lot of apologies, (especially to Richard Watts Lodge!) a random draw for tee times took place and 21 intrepid golfers took to the fairways.
Our Captain, dressed in a subtle shade of bright yellow, dazzled his 4 ball by sending his drive straight down the first fairway. He was accompanied by our honoured guest in Daniel Flowers from the Surrey masonic golf association who, despite being able to raise a team, came to support the day.
The appropriately named “Etchinghill Golf club” didn’t disappoint. Set close to the coast the Leas course climbs uphill for the first 9 holes and whilst at the top has stunning views over the Elham Valley and beyond.
Despite the forecast of intermittent showers throughout the day, all players returned dry and enjoyed a feast of sausage and mash.
After last month’s errors, the secretary took no chances on the scoring and was ably assisted by the captain to double check the cards!
