Hook, Line and Sinker: Masonic Fishing Charity Catches New Venue

On Thursday 15th June 2023, the Masonic Fishing Charity held its first event at its new venue of Cottington Lakes near Deal.  Set in forty-five acres of idyllic Kentish countryside, the fishery boasts eight different lakes of various sizes to cater to all events. Having been allocated the “Windsor”, the MFC set up its marquee to allow oversight of the entire lake.

It wasn’t long before the whoops could be heard all around the lake as fish were caught, no doubt down to  the expertise of the Students … with a little help from the Anglers!!!  Everyone landed fish to the relief of all.

Three local schools with nineteen students and their carers took part in the flagship event. The MFC were able to provide one angler per student, which allowed the participants to really get involved in the art of angling.

The day started with the arrival of the buses at 09:30. After a swift roll call, the group set out for their new experience – hats, sunglasses and sun cream providing essential protection on the gloriously sunny day.

The fish were obliging in their attention and many a happy face marked the catch of the notorious “tiddlers”.  Although the larger and more elusive finned friends were cautious, a few did succumb to the skilled (or lucky!) anglers lining the banks.

Lunch accorded a pleasant relief from the meridional power of the sun. Following their fill of food and drink, the happy group ceased refreshment and headed back to the ‘labour of the line’.

There was plenty of cheerleading and encouragement throughout the day from MFC Chairman David Alexander, Past Chairman Peter Brooshooft and VIP Guest of the day, Assistant Provincial Grand Master Duncan Rouse.

To round off the Event, it was time for the Presentations. Each student was given a medal and a certificate for “Angling Ability”. A representative of one of the schools thanked the MCF for a lovely day out.
