Freddy with a Gun Competition
This is an annual competition held for club members, it is multi-disciplined covering four of the clay shooting categories ‘Compact’ which is multi targets from varying angles first as a single target, then one following another and finally two together, this is shot from five different stands and five targets from each stand. ‘Down the Line’ which again is shot from five different positions, five targets at each position coming from an underground trap or launching machine but going off at varying angles away from the shooter. ‘Skeet’ twenty-five clays shot from seven positions around a semi-circle offering targets coming towards you, going away and crossing from left to right and right to left. Finally, ‘English Sporting’ ten targets from each stand in a country-like setting to simulate game shooting.

The format is set to test those competing and is shot over 125 targets with handicapping in place so that each member regardless of skill level has an opportunity to win. It also tests everyone as three of the disciplines are those that would not usually be shot only on days like the “Freddy” competition. We were very lucky with the weather and although it was overcast it remained dry throughout allowing for the usual banter that the club gatherings generate. The support that the club enjoys during these meetings is a mark of the fun that shooting can be as it is a fun event, competitive yes, but meant to be purely for fun as explained earlier it is not our usual format for shooting.
Why “Freddy with a Gun”?
Why “Freddy with a Gun” whether it can be seen from the pictures we’re unsure but the trophy has a resemblance to Freddy Mercury and has therefore been named Freddy. Some great scores were managed this year and the eventual winner was our Treasurer Martin Lane, (pictured) Runner Up was Dave Perrin and in joint Third Place were Steve Ball and Ian Rowan, congratulations to you all, see you all next year.
