East Kent regains the Sureken Silver Salver from Surrey.

Winner Julian Friel receives the Trophy from Geoffrey Dearing.
Friday the 23rd August saw the East Kent Golfers in action for the seventh fixture of the season and included a match against the Surrey Masonic Sports association for the coveted Sureken Silver Salver and having lost the trophy by a half a point in 2023, The East Kent Golfers had a point to prove.

We were also blessed with visitors from the newly formed Essex County Lodge (10045) who, fresh from their consecration bought 6 of their members to enjoy the fellowship and comradery of the day.

In all, 38 Golfers arrived at Faversham Golf club to a warm reception from the staff.   The 6 nominated players from East Kent and Surrey Teed off first with the remaining players randomly drawn by Vice Captain Roy Butler.

To add an extra competition to the day, each team was presented with a Yellow Ball and instructed that players from each group would take turns in using the yellow ball (from lowest to highest handicap).   And the winner decided by the highest “yellow” ball score.   However, there was a proviso, that once the yellow ball had been lost, their game was over.    In all 5 of the 10 teams managed to keep their yellow ball until the end.

The Sureken Silver Salver competition was more tightly contested.   Whilst Captain Chris Metherell & Keith Hodgson were comfortably ahead in the first game, Vice-Captain Roy Butler and Paul McGuirk were two down after 7 holes.     Managing to win the next two holes, they were all square at the turn.     They finally managed to sneak ahead on the 13th and were two up after the 14th.  The game was closed out on the 16th hole thanks to a magnificent par.

Past captains Darren Horne & Leon Zacharow’s also finished on 16th Hole with them loosing the final match.  Overall this brought a victory to East Kent of two games to one.
