Saturday 25th. September 2021 saw 24 intrepid Light Blue’s journey to Dartford Clay Shooting Club where they were hosted by the Provincial Clay Shooting Team to a “Come and Try It” session. Suitably attired in the necessary safety equipment of ear and eye protection they gathered for a safety briefing on the do’s and don’t’ s of shotgun safety before assembling in the practice area ready to ‘do battle’ with their adversaries, the little clay discs. The major topic of conversation seemed to be along the lines of “are they all that small”.
The group split into groups each group taking one of the five stands where various targets were thrown towards them or away from them and soon after the careful instruction and encouragement of the Provincial Team members they were breaking clays. There were one or two of the group that took to the sport very quickly and from the laughter and smiling faces we appear to have given them all a good time too. 600 clays and 600 cartridges later it was all over and we were able to retire to Dartford’s clubhouse where a buffet had been arranged. There were many questions about the sport, about the type of guns and as in all sport the cost, the chat’s went on for some time and possibly equalled the time spent shooting but that’s how clay shooting gets you, it’s a great sport and a great day was had by all. Thanks to the Provincial Team; Steve Ball, Bernie Connolly, Gary Cordier, Martin Lane and Roger Wilkes, sadly Martin Heddle and Keith Jones couldn’t get there because of the fuel shortage but from the comments we received I’m sure it will take place again.
