East Kent Golf Association – 2023 Season opener & Captains Drive off.

Canterbury Golf Club hosted the season opener for the East Kent Masonic golf Society in February.

Spring was in the air and the Sun shone on the 22 members & guests that took to the fairways for this event.   Due to a packed schedule of inter provincial matches this season, the traditional season opener moved to a month this year but was still well supported.

Daren Horne officially handed the captaincy over to Leon Zacharow who is the current WM of Royal Engineers lodge in Chatham.   In his role as Vice-captain last year, his first drive had gone wayward into the driving range at Littlestone Warren and so he nervously approached the first tee.   There was no issue this year though as he sent his drive straight down the middle of the fairway to rapturous applause.

Vice-captain for 2023 was Chris Metherell of Malling Centenary lodge who also sent his drive thundering down the first fairway.

At the end of the game, Julian Friel nervously sat in the club house awaiting the rest of the field with a magnificent 41 points.   Unfortunately for Julien, the last group of the day contained Daren Wilcock who pipped him to first place with an impressive 43 points.

Afterwards, the players enjoyed some fellowship over a hearty meal and short presentation ceremony.    As usual, our captain passed round the “fine bucket” which yielded £79.45 in donations to the captains charity which is the Gillingham Street Angels who were setup in 2018 to help Homeless & Vulnerable people in the Medway towns.
