Canterbury Food Bank began as a community project developed by a group of local churches in 2011.
Caring for local people in crisis, its charitable objectives are, the prevention or relief of poverty or financial hardship in the Canterbury City Council district by:
The provision of emergency food parcels, items, services and facilities to individuals in financial need.
Contributing to and cooperating with charities and other organisations working to prevent or relieve poverty within the county of Kent.
Canterbury Food Bank’s activities are delivered by a small staff team managing a large group of dedicated volunteers. While the roots of the charity lie in its Christian beginnings, it now brings together staff and volunteers of all faiths and none to provide a vital service to people.
The charity provides three-day food parcels to individuals and families in short term financial crisis across Canterbury, Whitstable, Herne Bay and surrounding villages.
The Food Bank fundraising manager, Molly, described the work they do explaining that they work with 120 different organisations to deliver necessary foodstuffs and household necessities direct to the doorstep, and that their number of clients had greatly increased recently due to the economic conditions brought about by the pandemic.
Molly went on to say, “Thank you to East Kent Freemasons for donating £500 to the Food Bank! Donations from the community help us to deliver thousands of meals to Canterbury residents”.
Peter Lapage said, “A most rewarding experience knowing that our donations, no matter how large or small, are going to local, good causes”.
