Burns comes to the Downs Lodge
Not Rabbie But Robbie!
Our Scottish adventure starts in the year 2004/2005, when one Rabbie, sorry Robbie Adamson had the idea to host a Burns Night Dinner. Proceedings would go to local charities, Whiskey would flow and a Poor Old Haggis would become the main course.
The first Downs Lodge Burns Night, proved so successful, that many wanting tickets, were left disappointed, that the tribute to Rabbie Burns would be celebrated every year.
On Saturday the 26 January 2019, the Dinner again took place, hosted by the Lodge Worshipful Master, Ivor Winham. A packed Masonic Hall was wined, dined, and suitably entertained by William ‘Bill’ Howie, who delivered an excellent address to the Haggis, followed by a recitation of Holy Willies Prayer. Bill was suitably attired in Nightgown and Nightcap, carrying a candle, in a darkened room.
The highlight for many, was the recital by Bill of the strangely named poem, “Ode Tae a Fart” by Rabbie Burns. This brought the house down or should I say, Hoose Doon with laughter and applause.
Well worth searching it for those that have never heard it.
Robbie Adamson in his usual persuasive manner set about relieving our guests of their spare cash in exchange for Raffle tickets. This resulted in the Downs Lodge making a generous donation to the Deal Hospital Minor Injuries Unit, to help in preventing it’s closure.
Over the years the Downs Lodge has been able to donate several thousand pounds to numerous worthy recipients within our area, amongst them being the Prostate Cancer Unit at the Kent and Canterbury Hospital for the purchasing of equipment to aid an early detection of this dreadful disease.
The Downs Lodge is proud of the charitable donations they are able to make and thank all of their generous supporters for allowing them to do so.
So Brethren, if you would like to join us in 2020, contact Robbie Adamson and let him know. He will then get back to you when the date is set, and if convenient to you, you can be assured of an excellent evening.
