Dark Blues Storm to Victory for the David Graeme Cup

David Graeme Trophy – Upchurch River Valley Golf Club

The East Kent Masonic Golf Association’s season came to a fitting close with the traditional Battle of the Aprons, as members competed for the prestigious David Graham Cup.

Now in its sixth year, this much-anticipated event saw the Dark Blues looking to recapture the glory of their inaugural win back in 2020. The competition was held at Upchurch Valley Golf Club, where players were welcomed with a hearty breakfast before heading out for the final round of the season.

Captain Roy Butler led a strong Dark Blue team of 20 members, while Paul Ames captained the Light Blues, who fielded 9 players. They were joined by five guests and visitors, adding to the camaraderie and spirit of the day.

The main event followed an individual Stableford format, with the David Graham Cup awarded based on each team’s average Stableford score. To further encourage teamwork and fun, there was also a “Yellow Ball” challenge, in which each group rotated a yellow ball and competed for the best group score.

The association was honoured to welcome David Graham himself—former Assistant Provincial Grand Master and past Provincial Grand Secretary—who spent the day walking the course, chatting with players, and offering words of encouragement.

When the scores were tallied, it was the Dark Blues who emerged triumphant, amassing 619 Stableford points—an average of 32.58 per player. The Light Blues put up a valiant effort, finishing with 252 points (an average of 28 per player). Our guests, who were not eligible for the main trophy, impressed with an excellent average of 35.33 points per player.

In the individual competition, Steve Allen (Richard Watts Lodge) took top honours with an impressive 41 points. Captain Roy Butler (Maeides Stanna Lodge) secured second place with 39 points, while guest Chris Hill claimed third.

The Yellow Ball Competition was dominated by the Richard Watts Lodge quartet of Ash Lawrence, Dave Woodward, Steve Allen, and Tony Culver, who stormed to victory with 84 points.

Finally, the tongue-in-cheek prize for the “Best Value Day” went to Nick Alder, narrowly missing out on first place to Philip Hughes.

There was a collection for the captains charity which thanks to the generosity of the members meant the final balance for the year was a huge £3,340.28 for Five Acre Wood School.

It was a superb day of fellowship, competition, and sportsmanship—exactly the spirit the East Kent Masonic Golf Association aims to uphold. Congratulations once again to the Dark Blues on their well-earned victory!

Geoffrey Gordon Dearing Bowl – Tenterden Golf Club

Members of the East Kent Masonic Golf Association came together at the beautiful Tenterden Golf Club to contest this year’s Geoffrey Gordon Dearing Bowl which is an individual Stableford competition donated by our much-loved Past Provincial Grand Master.

Despite heavy forecasts of rain, the sun shone on the 36 players and guests from East Kent and the weather stayed dry making for an enjoyable round on an excellent course.

The star of the show was Past Captain Derek Reed (Spirit of Rugby Lodge), who produced the round of his life. Scoring 45 Stableford points with a superb four-over-par round, Derek claimed a well-deserved victory.

Runner-up was Roger Charter (Weald of Kent Lodge), who made good use of his home advantage to finish on 37 points.

There were plenty of other strong performances:

Paul Ames (Sir Edward Elgar Lodge) – 36 points Third place

Wendy Davenport – Best Lady Golfer

Fraser Gregory – “Most Golf Played”

The day was full of camaraderie, good humour, and fine golf.

Congratulations to Derek and all our prize-winners and huge thank you to Tenterden Golf Club not only for their warm welcome and excellent hospitality but for their donation of a 4 ball voucher which was Auctioned for £120 for our Captains Charity of Five Acre Wood School.

Richard Watts Lodge Regains the William Blay Trophy

On Friday 25th July, the East Kent Masonic Golf Association held its annual William Blay Trophy competition at the scenic Chestfield Golf Club. In a landmark moment for the Association, this year’s event proudly welcomed lady golfers from West Kent — the first time such participation has taken place in East Kent, marking a significant step forward in inclusivity and inter-Province camaraderie.

The competition, held in fine summer conditions, attracted 47 Players and guests from across Kent making it the busiest event of the year so far. The course, perched above Whitstable with coastal views and a mix of tight fairways and fast greens, offered a true test of skill and strategy.

The William Blay Trophy, usually housed in the museum at Canterbury was donated by the past Deputy Grand Master for the Masonic Province of Kent before its division into two provinces.  The competition is a team Stableford format with the best three of four scores from each lodge team counting toward the result.

As in previous years, the entry criteria for each lodge were only two subscribing members with a selection of single players being randomly drawn to make up the teams. The support this year was exceptional with eight lodges entering at least one team ensuring a highly competitive and enjoyable day.

iiAn Impressive Day on the Greens Ends in Glory for East Kent Masons

The third Interprovincial competition of the 2025 season saw the East Kent Masonic Golf Association host the Surrey Masonic Sports Association for the prestigious Surken Silver Salver.

Having mislaid the trophy in 2024, the Surrey Team arrived at Sittingbourne & Milton Regis Golf club which was in top condition thanks to the recent glorious weather.

The day started with the usual breakfast meeting and the format would be decided on five single games between the two sides with each game being decided by the most Stableford points.  As Surrey had some late withdrawals, the East Kent team comprised of Captain Roy Butler, Vice Captain Paul Ames past captains, Daren Horne, Leon Zacharow and Chris Metherell.

In the end, East Kent stormed to victory, winning all 5 games for a clean sweep.

Standout Individual Performances

While the team result was a cause for celebration, individual brilliance also lit up the day. Leon Zacharow of the Royal Engineers Lodge in Chatham and playing at his home course, delivered a masterclass in consistency and control, finishing with 42 points to claim his first win of the season.

Second place was tightly contested, with Dave Woodward of the Richard Watts Lodge taking the runner-up spot on 36 points, just edging out his lodge brother Ben Parrish, who also finished with 36 points but narrowly lost out on countback. The strong showing from Richard Watts Lodge highlighted their intent for the forthcoming William Blay event at Chestfield Golf club in July.

Congratulations to all participants, and especially to Leon Zacharow for his exceptional round. The spirit of Freemasonry was well and truly alive on the course, and the East Kent Masonic Golf Association can take great pride in a well-earned victory.

Captain Roy Butler also gave a heartfelt outline of his charity for the year which is Five Acre Wood school and as a result the “fine bucket” raised a wonderful £165 for the year.

Play For The

Kent Silver Salver

Runner up Nick Alder (right)

The second East Kent masonic Golf event of the 2025 Season got underway at West Malling golf club on the last Friday in May.

West Kent Masonic Golf association has seen a huge resurgence in the last couple of years thanks to their secretary and APGM Bipin Patel, whose enthusiasm and hard work has seen attendance at his events rise considerably.

The Kent Silver Salver is the trophy for the East V West competition and is hotly contested not only for the trophy but also the bragging rights for the county of Kent.  Having held the trophy for several years, it was East Kent’s turn to host and we returned to West Malling Golf Club and the shorter but tricky Hurricane course.

The event saw 40 golfers take to the fairways in this competition and, to enable as many people as possible to take part of each team, we held 9 individual matches.  The winner of each match would be decided by the highest combined Stableford score for each match earning a point for their own Province.  To add an element of camaraderie between the provinces, there was also an additional team competition with the best two from four scores on each hole being counted towards a team prize.

As the sun shone, East Kent’s Captain Roy Butler, accompanies by Julian Friel, led the way playing West Kent’s past captain Peter Richards and Victor Powell.  The matches then set off one by one to negotiate the tight fairways, dykes and water hazards that the Hurricane course offers.

In the end, East Kent Came home victorious with them winning 6 of the matches and drawing one meaning they retained the Kent Silver Salver.

Captain Roy Butler also gave a heartfelt outline of his charity for the year which is Five Acre Wood school and as a result the “fine bucket” raised a wonderful £165 for the year.
