After a very successful year where we were supported not only by our own members but also visiting provinces that attended the shoots that we hosted, we have been able to support yet another charity within the province. Five of the members travelled down to Demelza House at Sittingbourne where the charity were holding one of their weekends for the children and where we had supplied a set of 17 African Drums and many other percussion instruments to be used in their Music therapy sessions.
The Charity offers support to children, young people, parents and carers at their bereavement support weekends which are held throughout the year. The non-residential weekends are free to children and their families and are staffed by the charities trained volunteers. Children that have suffered bereavement of someone close are encouraged to share their feelings in a safe, nurturing place. They can ask questions and learn strategies to help them deal with difficult emotions such as grief, fear, anger and sadness. The weekend activities are full of creative and musical activities which are designed to help the children to hold on to those precious memories of their loved one, whilst learning to let go of the sadness.
At the end of a bereavement weekend, each child goes away with a memory box full of things that they have made that help them to remember their special person. In addition, children get to meet other children and young people who have experienced bereavement, be listened to by people who understand and find new ways to cope and have fun!
The provincial shooting club have been established for ten years and have during that time donated in excess of £12,000 to charities in the province as well as assisting the National Masonic Clay Shooting Association in their support of national charities. We were founded to promote clay shooting within freemasonry and to promote freemasonry at shoots and within the shooting fraternity even adopting the Lodge of Friendship & Service No. 6584 as the home lodge of the provincial team, long may we be able to support these worthy causes.
