TEDDIES FOR LOVING CARE APPEAL (EAST KENT)
TLC (East Kent) is the local branch of a national charity, registration number 1124413, which provides teddy bears to hospital accident and emergency wards, minor injury units and so on, throughout East Kent.
Teddies are supplied in bulk to these units and the medical staff, in turn, give one to each child that is admitted to the unit and is in distress over their injuries or of the treatment they are about to receive.
Cuddling the bear helps the child to relax and enables the medical staff to get on with the treatment. The bears can help the medical staff befriend the child, they can be used as a reward for the child’s bravery and, sometimes, can be used to demonstrate the treatment that is to be given. However you look at it, the child benefits greatly from the gift and at the end of the treatment, the child takes the bear home.
Such are the benefits of the scheme that the demand for bears has grown over the years, rising to about 12,000 bears a year. In February 2014 the 100,000th teddy bear in East Kent was delivered to the Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother hospital in Margate. This was the first hospital in East Kent to receive a TLC bear and the 100,000th was delivered by Malcolm Harley who, some ten years earlier, delivered the first TLC bear to the hospital. Malcolm was accompanied on this special occasion by Ray Stone, now Honorary Vice-President of the East Kent branch.
The charity relies entirely on volunteers to raise funds for the purchase of the bears and then to distribute them to the emergency units. The local volunteers are East Kent Freemasons together with their wives, families and friends. Much time is spent fund-raising at a wide range of events, masonic and otherwise, throughout the year and social and sporting functions are also held to help provide some of the much-needed income to support the charity. New volunteers are always welcome, please contact the branch secretary mentioned below.
£18,000 a year is needed to enable the charity to continue its work. Some of this comes from the Cornwallis East Kent Freemasons Charity, and some comes from the fundraising events mentioned above. However to continue its work the charity needs the support of more individuals, lodges, chapters and other Masonic units in East Kent.
Lodges and Chapters can donate to the charity from their Benevolent Account or, if they hold one, from their Grand Charity Relief Chest.
Please think of this worthy charity when considering your charitable donations.
Cheques should be made payable to TLC Appeal East Kent and posted to the Branch Treasurer: Keith Evans, 15 Ash Grove, Maidstone, Kent, ME16 0AA.
