On the evening of Friday 11th August 2017, the Sheerness United Masonic Club hosted its first Annual Celebration Awards Evening. The six Lodges and two Chapters in Sheerness were asked to nominate one member who had given exceptional service. It should be a member who, by simply going that ‘extra mile’, deserved a pat on the back in recognition of his hard work and commitment.

The evening was well attended by Lodges supporting their nominees together with family members and friends. With the Club Chairman, Richard Wingett, narrating the celebrations, the Lodge and Chapter representatives were called forward one after the other. They introduced their nominee, presented the Awards Certificate, and embarrassed them with many kind words and heaps of praise.

Their faces said it all and the applause from everyone present showed a huge level of support and true appreciation on such a lovely occasion. One recipient, Bob Fulton - a member of two Lodges - was independently nominated by each lodge for his commitment and dedication. Receiving his award, Bob said: “I’m not very good with the ‘book’ but I do my best to get things done and support everyone the best way I can”. He was respected by his lodges for his drive and determination to ‘do his bit’.

And this was the purpose of the evening, simply to recognise members for their contributions and to say a big thank-you.  The evening was further enhanced with musical entertainment by Annie Love a very talented singer.

The evening concluded with a very special celebration, a dedication to Dennis Wyatt who sadly passed away earlier this year. Dennis was and shall ever be remembered for being an exceptional man and mason, someone who was kind, sincere and a true gentleman. Dennis was a Past Master of United Service Lodge No 3124 and a Past Chairman of the club. It was the wish of his Lodge, together with Dennis’s close family, to dedicate the main members’ bar in his honour. Whilst tinged with obvious sadness, it was with great pride that Silvia Bowles - on behalf of Dennis’s family - unveiled the new Dennis Wyatt Lounge plague to everyone’s delight.

Following the success of the evening, it is now planned to hold the Celebration Awards every year.
