RNLI Flag being held in front of the Golfers after the day’s competition.

Westgate and Birchington Golf Club invited Freemasons from Thanet  to join forces on the 19th May and hold a Charity Golf Day. The event was to support the RNLI ‘May Day’ campaign raising funds for local RNLI personnel’s Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

Westgate and Birchington Golf Club provided their facilities free and donated prizes for the winners. They also laid on a Hog Roast supper and live entertainment for the participants of the match.

The day was not only to raise funds for PPE but to say ‘Thank You’ to our unsung local coastal heroes from Whitstable to Dover. To that end, RNLI personnel were guests of the club and the golfing Freemasons. Thanet’s Brethren and Companions each paid a fee which entitled them, and a member of the RNLI, to a round of golf. It also covered the evening’s supper and entertainment. They were ably assisted by members of the Corinthian Lodge No. 1208 (from Dover) and the Friendship From Service Lodge No.7691 (London).

Arrangements had also been made for the Provincial Mobile Display Unit to attend for several hours to help promote the benefits of Freemasonry.

The competitors met at the club at 10 am and tucked in to a bacon roll, coffee and a brandy. A mixed draw was then made according to handicap and, in a wet start to the day, the golfer’s tee’d off. They were led by the club captain (Paul Newman) and the Chairman of the Whitstable branch of the RNLI (Mark Laming). Golfers drawn in fours consisted of two Freemasons and two members of the RNLI. The Freemasons were led by their local Group Chairman, Terry McGlone.

A short respite from the inclement weather allowed the intrepid sportsmen to remove wet gear and get down to some serious play with the occasional short sharp shower.

At the end of play, a relaxing glass or two was enjoyed in the Club’s 19th hole where tales of ‘longest drive’ and ‘missed shots’ were discussed in depth whilst waiting for the classified results.

Lodges and Chapters that could not enter teams supported the event by sponsorship. Individual holes were generously sponsored by local businesses and Lodges.

The local Westgate Butcher, Baker and Greengrocer supported the event by giving some of their produce or discount vouchers.

For a small charge, members of local Lodges/Chapters were invited to support the event by attending the evening Hog Roast and entertainment. They were joined by their wives, partners and families, Golf Club members and members of the RNLI.

A very successful day was enjoyed by everyone and more than £2000 was raised for the RNLI. It was also a good example of community involvement by Westgate and Birchington Golf Club and the local Freemasons.
