The Demelza House children’s hospice near Sittingbourne in Kent held an open evening on 13th May to say “Thank You” for the continuing financial support and other help provided by local Freemasons. It was also an opportunity for the hospice to provide information about the services they provide and share their achievements. The evening was attended by Freemasons and their wives and families from various parts of Kent.
The visitors received a warm welcome from Worshipful Brother Pat Flanagan and the staff at Demelza House, which was followed by a tour of the hospice and its gardens. Light refreshments were provided afterwards giving an opportunity for the visitors to speak to the staff and ask more questions.
During the evening a cheque for £1,099 was presented to David Holmes, the fund-raiser for Demelza, on behalf of the Freemasons, friends and families from Shepway. The funds were raised from a “Mick’s Musical Bingo Night” recently held at the Masonic Hall in Sandgate. The event was organised by Worshipful Brother Michael Lay and his wife Joan. The evening was a huge success and the personal donations were “Gift Aided” which should increase the total amount given.
Mick and Joan have arranged many of these nights over the past fifteen years, enabling various Lodges at Sandgate, Hythe, Folkestone, Dymchurch, Dover and Sittingbourne to raise monies, a recent example being the 2014 Festival in favour of the Freemasons’ Grand Charity. All of these evenings have been enjoyable as well as profitable, but this one for Demelza proved to be the ”Icing on the Cake” and Mick and Joan wish to give a Big Thank You to everyone that supported them.
