Earlier this year a group of lodges and chapters in Medway, together with the Cornwallis East Kent Freemasons’ Charity, raised £10,330 for the Ruby Young Appeal. Shortly after her second birthday in 2014, Rainham toddler Ruby was found to be suffering from neuroblastoma, a rare and aggressive form of childhood cancer. Ruby’s parents Rob and Vikki, set out to raise £500,000 for live-saving treatment in the USA.
East Kent Freemasons responded to the appeal and in March 2015, Ruby and her mother were presented with a cheque for £10,330 from the Cornwallis East Kent Freemasons’ Charity. Click here to read the report.
Ruby’s third birthday was on 10th June but, knowing that her surgery was imminent, Ruby and her family celebrated her birthday a few weeks earlier. Ruby was in hospital on her birthday recovering from major surgery. After twelve hours on the operating table, the surgeons announced that approximately 75% of the tumour had been removed but they could not continue further as the risk to Ruby’s life was too great. The tumour had entangled itself so much with her internal organs that it had proved necessary to remove one of her kidneys. Despite this major surgery, Ruby has bounced back and is now preparing for another round of chemotherapy, still with the NHS, but more intensive than before.
Not long after she returned home from hospital, a fund-raising day was held for her on 20th June in the grounds of Thames View School in Rainham. Hundreds of local families turned out to enjoy the day with Ruby and her family and help raise over £3,500 to add to the appeal. Amazingly, and despite suffering from a cold, Ruby stayed throughout the afternoon and joined in many of the activities along with the other children.
On the eve of this event, Anita Marinelli the family’s chief fundraiser, announced that the total raised so far had just exceeded £410,000. This is an amazing achievement, considering that the appeal was started in October 2014, and all credit must go to Anita and her team for the wide range of fund-raising ideas they have come up with. With the takings from this fun day, another step towards the final goal of £500,000 has been taken.
If you wish to support the appeal please send your cheque, made payable to “NCCA-UK Ruby Youngs Journey”, to Anita Marinelli c/o 3 The Courtyard, Holding Street, Rainham, Kent. ME8 7HL.
Alternatively you can donate at justgiving.com/RubyYoungJourney or text RLYJ88 and the amount you wish to give to 70070.
