De Shurland Lodge No 1089
meets at the Masonic Hall, St Georges Avenue, Isle of Sheppey.
The Lodge was warranted in 1866 when, in common with the other two lodges on the
Island, meetings were held at local inns. In 1909 these three Lodges established
the Masonic Centre in Sheerness where a total of 6 Craft Lodges meet along with
other Orders.
The Lodge was always heavily influenced by the Royal Navy and the nearby Royal
Naval Dockyard, particularly during two world wars. The Lodge, like the Island,
has had to adapt to change following the withdrawal of the Royal Navy and the
closure of the Royal Navy Dockyard and other changes in the nature of local employment.
Today, the Lodge is in fine shape, with over 80 members and is a tribute to the original
founders.
The Lodge is very proud of the fact that in April this year Nick Waller will be invested
as an Assistant Provincial Grand Master and Richard Wingett as the Provincial Senior
Grand Warden. Two such appointments in one year are thought to be unique.

The Lodge is a great supporter of local charities on the Isle of Sheppey. Each year,
representatives of local charities are invited to the Masonic Centre for a special
evening where financial donations are made, so enabling increased support for locally
based activities, particularly those supporting the younger generation.

The Lodge has a busy social life. In May and again in December a ‘white table’ meeting
is held to which family members and non Masonic guests are invited. These events are
very popular, well supported, and thoroughly enjoyed, especially as the December
meeting is close to Christmas.
Throughout the year there are various social functions arranged by the Masonic Centre
for all the Lodges. De Shurland members, their families and guests, are great supporters
of these events.
