St Augustine Lodge had a number of reasons to celebrate at their recent meeting in September. The Universities Scheme Lodge in Canterbury played host to the Assistant Grand Master, Sir David Wootton, in his capacity as President of Grand Lodge’s Universities Scheme. Sir David was accompanied by the Deputy Provincial Grand Master, Peter Williams and Assistant Provincial Grand Master, David Graeme. Together with other members of the Universities Scheme, they witnessed an excellent triple initiation of two students and one resident of Canterbury. The ceremony was presided over by the Lodge Master, Peter Jenkins, and involved many members, each delivering their part well. It was also marked by a faultless and rousing lecture on the Tracing Board by Wei Paul Wong, despite needing crutches to stand! A remarkable achievement since Wei has been a member of the lodge since March 2016.
The meeting also marked the 100th initiation from the Province’s membership initiative, spearheaded by Barry Devereese. This landmark was reached by the third of the evening’s candidates, Luke Sullivan, who followed Niko Majstorović and Ivan Vedrichkov into the lodge.
At the Festive Board, the Assistant Grand Master remarked on what a great occasion the event had been. He congratulated all three new Brethren and Luke on becoming the 100th person in the scheme in East Kent. Sir David also noted the truly international nature of St. Augustine Lodge with members hailing from Croatia, Serbia, Romania, Brazil, Iraq, Malaysia, and even Wiltshire!
Members of the Lodge are looking forward to attending the forthcoming Universities Scheme Conference on the 4th November at Freemasons’ Hall in London.
